Dechohere
Dechohere is a deep granular audio effect for Max for Live, built for turning sound into something fluid, unstable, musical, and alive.
Feed it live audio, drop in a sample, freeze a performance, or build an eight-slot splice reel. Dechohere breaks the source into grains and lets you stretch, scatter, reverse, harmonize, blur, orbit, and reshape them in real time.
At its center is a performance system inspired by black holes, gravity, and sound crossing an event horizon. Save four complete device states to A, B, C, and D, then move smoothly between them with the Gravity control. Orbit can animate that movement automatically, while Horizon captures the active grain field and turns it into playable frozen matter.
Three playback engines give the device very different identities:
- Time Stretch changes timing while preserving pitch.
- Varispeed couples speed and pitch like tape.
- Frippertronics layers live input into fading, darkening repeats.
The grain engine ranges from isolated particles to long, overlapping clouds and audio-rate glitch. Blur, Diffusion, four grain envelopes, stereo Field, and Field Motion help separate grains fuse into a cohesive moving atmosphere.
Dechohere is also designed to remain musical. Grain pitch and Varispeed can follow the Ableton Live session scale. The Harmony engine quantizes every new harmony grain to that scale, while Constellation creates repeatable or evolving scale-safe melodic phrases.
For longer performances and sound design sessions, the Reel system holds up to eight imported or recorded pieces of audio. Record clean input or the processed Dechohere output, choose forward, reverse, or mixed playback, then manually morph or automatically travel across the occupied reels.
Dechohere can be subtle, beautiful, broken, rhythmic, or immense. It is equally at home creating ambient beds, ghost harmonies, frozen vocals, evolving drones, tape loops, rhythmic fragments, and alien granular movement.
