Generative sequencers have a problem. You press randomize, you like what you hear, and
now you're racing to record it before it's gone.
SETI Transmitter doesn't work that way. It calculates its pattern from six numbers on
the panel, so the same settings produce the same groove every time. Live saves those
numbers with your set. Find something good and you already have it — nothing to
capture, nothing to lose.
It is random. It's just the same random every time.
WHICH MEANS IT CAN EVOLVE
MUTATION sets how big one change is. GENERATION says how many changes deep you are.
Generation 5 is always the same five steps from the same starting point — so you can
walk a pattern somewhere interesting and walk it straight back.
Put GENERATION in an automation lane and the rhythm develops across the arrangement,
playing back identically every pass, with no MIDI recorded.
RANDOM NOTES THAT COME BACK
Point NOTE A and NOTE B at any two notes from C-2 to G8 — two pads in a drum rack, two
keys on a synth. Then open RANDOM and hits start straying somewhere else, with RANGE
deciding how far, up to two octaves either side.
The strays are calculated from the seed and the step number, so a melody you like
returns exactly, every playback. On a rack it wanders into neighbouring pads. On a
synth it's a line you can keep.
EIGHT KINDS OF SIGNAL
morse sends a real word in dots and dashes — SETI, SOS, HI, LIFE, ECHO, WOW, PING,
CALL, LOCK, SIGNAL — with a dash held as one long note. binary repeats a short motif.
prime only allows hits on prime-numbered steps, so the gaps never settle. pulsar is a
tight periodic pulse. beacon is a short call and a long silence. burst is clusters
separated by space. drift runs four bars, nudged at each bar line so bar four isn't bar
one. contact stitches together fragments of earlier transmissions, so phrases come
back.
INTELLIGENCE
runs each of them from scattered to rigid. DENSITY thins from the quietest
hits up, or fills the rests with ghosts. LOCK decides how tightly it holds the grid —
open it and notes scatter late, deterministically, like a signal losing lock.
PRINTS WHAT YOU HEAR
One button writes the pattern into a MIDI clip on its own track — your notes, the
random ones included, with velocities, note lengths and LOCK's timing exactly as
played. For when you want to edit it by hand or hand it to something else.
ONE STRIP
Eighteen parameters, all of them on the device face. No floating window, nothing to
open, nothing hidden.
